CAPTREE STAR, Captree, NY – 1994  The "CAPTREE STAR" from Captree, NY circa 1994.   Notice the school kids neatly seated at the start of a class fishing trip.   You can just imagine the chaos later on in the day.  DORIS MAE IV, Barnegat Light, NJ – 1994  The "DORIS MAE IV" from Barnegat Light, NJ circa 1994.   This fast and heavily built boat was built by Gulf Craft, Patterson, LA.   She is on her third set of engines and is still one of the best offshore party fishing vessels in New Jersey.   Captains Charles and Ron Eble owned and operated this boat since she was launched in 1975 through 2014.   She is now sailing as Captain Jeff Gutman's "VOYAGER" from Point Pleasant, NJ.  FLAMINGO III, Brooklyn, NY – 1994  Captain Bob Wiegand's "FLAMINGO III" from Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, NY circa 1994.   Built in 1973, she is one of the earliest party boats made by Lydia Yachts, Stuart, FL.   She was formerly the "BLUE HERON" from Riviera Beach, FL.  JIB VI, Captree, NY – 1994  The party boat "JIB VI" from Captree, NY circa 1994.   She was built in 1972 by Gillikin Craft Inc., Beaufort, NC.  MISS TOWNSENDS INLET II, Sea Isle City, NJ – 1994  The "MISS TOWNSENDS INLET II" from Sea Isle City, NJ circa 1994.   Built in 1977 by Breaux's Bay Craft at Loreauville, LA, this aluminum vessel first sailed as the "BLUE HERON III" from Riviera Beach, FL.   Sold in 1995, she became the ferryboat "FREEDOM" and sailed from Martha's Vineyard, MA.   She is presently sailing as the party fishing boat "SEA QUEEN II" from Hyannis, MA. 
PASTIME II, Brooklyn, NY – 1994  Captain George Richford's "PASTIME II" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY is seen here drifting for fluke near the tip of Sandy Hook during the summer of 1994.   Built in 1963 by Stowman Shipyard at Dorchester, NJ, she first sailed as the "CAPTAIN JOHN II" from Plymouth, MA.   She was later sold and sailed as the "MISS NEL" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY, and later as the "WHITE EAGLE III" from the same port.   In 2001, she moved to Solomons, Maryland and sailed as the "VANESSA MARIE" until she failed to pass inspection in 2006 and was dismantled.  PIONEER II Jersey City, NJ – 1994  Captain Gerry De Toro's "PIONEER II" sailed from Jersey City, NJ.   Yank Boat Works built her in 1981 at Tuckahoe, NJ as Captain Marty Tave's "RENEGADE".   She is presently sailing as Captain John McGivney's "LUCKY CHARM" from Atlantic Highlands, NJ.  SAND SHARK II, Belmar, NJ – 1994  Captain Lou Faccendia's "SAND SHARK II" from Belmar, NJ circa 1994.   Price Boat Yard, Deltaville, VA built her in 1956 as the “FLYING FISH” from Point Pleasant, NJ.   She was previously Captain Al Hilliard's "PROWLER" from Atlantic Highlands, NJ.   She was remodeled and later sailed as Captain Ray Burke’s "CAPT. SLAUGHTER" and lastly as Captain Scott Gould’s "BANDIT".   She was lost to a fire at her pier.  SEA HORSE, Atlantic Highlands, NJ – 1994  The "SEA HORSE" from Atlantic Highlands, NJ and skippered by Captains Ed Bunting Sr. and Jr. circa 1994.   Gillikin Boat Works, Harkers Island, NC, built her in 1964 as the "JESS-LU IV" from Freeport, NY and she later became the "CAPT. WAYNE" from Captree, NY.   She then became Captain Ed Bunting's "SEA HORSE" from Atlantic Highlands, NJ.   In 1992, Captain Bunting took her back to Gillikin for a complete refurbishing.   She returned to New Jersey with a new look and still sails from Atlantic Highlands, NJ.  SEA QUEEN, Hyannis, MA – 1994  The "SEA QUEEN" from Hyannis, MA circa 1994.   She was built in 1971 by Machine & Supply Co., Beaufort, NC as the "BLUE HERON IV".   She later became Captain Tommy Marconi's "PILOT II" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. 
SEA STAR, Cape May, NJ – 1994  The "SEA STAR II" was built in 1957 by Stowman Shipyards, Dorchester, NJ as the "JAMIACA" and sailed from Bogan's Basin at Brielle, New Jersey.   She later sailed as the "DAUNTLESS" and then as Captain Francis Bogan's "ATLANTIS".   After that, she was sold, remodeled and became the "SEA STAR II".   She was last seen in 2007 tied to a pier at Barnegat Light, New Jersey and was in a rundown state.   Her present fate is unknown.  SPEEDY EXPRESS, Captree, NY – 1994  Captain Arnold 'Speedy' Hubert's party boat "SPEEDY EXPRESS" from Captree, NY circa 1994.   She was built in 1984 by Lydia Yachts as the "HURRICANE" and later sailed as the "MISS POINT LOOKOUT III".   She is currently sailing as the "MISS AVALON" from Avalon, NJ.  ST. ANTHONY, Captree, NY – 1994  The "ST. ANTHONY" from Captree, NY circa 1994.   Launched in 1970 by Outer Banks Boatworks as the "CAPT. JOSEPH IV", she was renamed the "CAPT. JOSEPH II" and renamed again as the "ST. ANTHONY".   She later became the "RANGER" and finally, the "CAP'N ANDY II".   This boat was the first one launched by Outer Banks and at 85 feet, she is also one of the larger party boats built by James Gillikin.  SUPER RANGER, Brooklyn, NY – 1994  Captain Mike Scarpati's "SUPER RANGER" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY circa 1994.   Gulf Craft Inc. at Patterson, LA built her in 1988 and she is currently sailing as the whale watch vessel "PRIVATEER IV" from Gloucester, MA.   Photo courtesy of Ed Keefe Jr.  AMERICAN EAGLE, Belmar, NJ – 1995  The "AMERICAN EAGLE" was another of the party fishing boats built by Deebold Boat Works at Atlantic City, NJ.   Deebold boats were typically very heavy, but a pair of GM 12-71 diesel engines made the "AMERICAN EAGLE" a speedy boat.   Launched in 1965 as the "JO ANN IV", she sailed from Bahr's Landing at Highlands, NJ.    She then sailed as the "BIG-MARIE-S" from Belmar, NJ before becoming Captain Hank Leonard's AMERICAN EAGLE.   Captain Leonard later sold the vessel to Mark Campbell, who continued to operate her from Belmar, NJ as a charter boat.  On February 29, 2004, the "AMERICAN EAGLE" entered Manasquan Inlet and lost her steering.  She struck the jetty inside the inlet and began taking on water. APACHE V, Brooklyn, NY – 1995  The "APACHE V" at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY circa 1995.   The "APACHE V" was built in 1969 by Covacevich Shipyards at Biloxi, Mississippi.   She was sold in 1996 and totally renovated into the luxury cruise yacht "EASTERN STAR".   She now sails from Chelsea Piers in Manhattan and cruises New York Harbor and the surrounding waters.  CAPT. WHITTAKER, Captree, NY – 1995  The "CAPT. WHITTAKER" from Captree, New York circa 1995.   She is another old, but very well maintained, party boat.   She was built in 1957 by Gillikin Brothers Boat Works, Harkers Island, NC and she has dry exhaust stacks (not normally found on Gillikin party boats.)  CAPTAIN AL, Point Lookout, NY – 1995  The steel-hulled "CAPTAIN AL" from Point Lookout, NY and skippered by Captain Al Lindroth circa 1995.   She is affectionately known as the "Green Banana".   One of the best local codfishing boats (and arguably one of the wettest.)   She was built at the New Bern Shipyards, New Bern, NC in 1965.  MISS BARNEGAT LIGHT, Barnegat Light, NJ – 1972  The steel-hulled "MISS BARNEGAT LIGHT" sailing from Barnegat Light, NJ circa 1972 and skippered by Captain John Larson.   The same boat builder also made the "CAPTAIN AL".   (Yes, they look very similar – New Bern Shipyards only built two party boats, the rest of their creations were commercial dragger boats and ferries.)   In 1974, Captain Larson converted her into a commercial 'longliner' fishing boat and renamed her as the "LORI L" and still owns her today.  CAPTREE QUEEN II, Captree, NY – 1995  The "CAPTREE QUEEN II" was built in 1979 by Yank Boatworks at Tuckahoe, NJ.   She has since been sold and relocated to the west coast and sails from Anacortes, Washington as the whale watching vessel, "ISLAND EXPLORER II".   Severely damaged on June 7, 2007 when she struck a submerged rock off the coast of Whidbey Island, WA, her current condition and fate is unknown. 
ISLAND PRINCESS, Captree, NY – 1995  The "ISLAND PRINCESS" from Captree, New York circa 1995.   Built in 1962 by A.C. Boat Works at Atlantic City, NJ as the "CAPTAIN STARN III", she was sold in 1974 to Captains Tony 'Mo' Barbato and Dan Kenny who relocated her to Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY as their charter boat "BIG MOHAWK II".   After that, she was sold to Captains Marty Tave and Gary Fagan and sailed from Belmar, NJ under the same "BIG MOHAWK II" name.   She later joined the Captree, NY fleet as the "ISLAND PRINCESS".   The vessel has since found her way back to Belmar, NJ, and is now sailing once again as the "BIG MOHAWK II" operated by Captain Chris Hueth.  OUTLAW, Belmar, NJ – 1995  Captain Bob Nash’s "OUTLAW" from Belmar, NJ circa 1995.   Hammarstrom Boat Yard, Waretown, NJ built her as Captain Arnold Boardman’s "YANKEE SWORD" in 1967.   Captain Boardman later sold the boat to Captain Hank Leonard who also sailed her under the "YANKEE SWORD" name (from Belmar, NJ.)  SEA PIGEON IV, Perth Amboy, NJ – 1995  Captain Marty Haines places the final coat on the guard just below the furniture grade mahogany woodwork on his "SEA PIGEON IV".  SEA PIGEON IV, Perth Amboy, NJ – 1995  Yup!   Captain Marty Haines' "SEA PIGEON IV" is a real beauty from stem to stern.  SEA WOLF, Brooklyn, NY – 1995  Captain Ed Moraski's "SEA WOLF" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY circa 1995.   Shown here anchored on the Sea Bright reef fishing for Porgies.   Maybe you can spot the Twin Lights lighthouse at Sandy Hook, NJ in the far background.   The "SEA WOLF" was once the "MISS MOORE" and sailed from Great Kills, Staten Island, NY. 
SKIPPER, Belmar, NJ – 1995  The original "SKIPPER" circa 1995.   She was built by Captain John Zeigler on the banks of the Raritan River in New Brunswick, NJ in 1941 and she fished primarily for Blackfish.   She was built with full–length planking that ran from the stem to the stern in one piece.   The "SKIPPER" sailed from Belmar, NJ.   She was siezed by the Navy during Wolrd War II and used as a coastal patrol boat (she was returned to Captain Zeigler at the end of the war.)   Captain Dom Vitolo Sr. purchased her when Captain Zeigler retired and she became one of the premier Blackfish boats on the coast.  Captain John Connell then bought the boat and sailed her from Viking Marina, Staten Island, NY.   Several years ago, the "SKIPPER" was purchased by Captain John Potter and now sails from Martha's Vineyard, MA (that's where this picture was taken.)   After sailing for more than 70 years, she has earned the designation as the oldest party boat currently in operation.  CAPT. EDDIE B III, Captree, NY – 1996  Captain Eddie Brincat's "CAPT. EDDIE B III" is one of several Gillikin-built party boats to have sailed from Captree, NY during the last three decades.   Built in 1971 by Outer Banks Boatworks (a Gillikin-owned boatyard), she originally sailed as the "CAPT. JOSEPH".   Later, Captain Kevin Bradshaw purchased the boat and she became his "DOROTHY B VII" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY.   After that, she became the "CAPT. EDDIE B III".  DONNA B, Jersey City, NJ – 1996  The "DONNA B" from Jersey City, NJ fishing for Flounder in Raritan Bay, NJ in 1996.   The "DONNA B" only fished for a couple of years in our area before becoming the "CAPTAIN CAL" from Belmar, NJ and then the "ONSET CHIEF" from New Bedford, MA.   The boat recently returned to our local waters and is presently sailing as the "CAPT. MIKE" from Howard Beach, NY.   The Verrazano Narrows Bridge in the background spans the Hudson River Narrows between Brooklyn, NY and Staten Island, NY.  FISHERMEN, Atlantic Highlands, NJ – 1996  The "FISHERMEN" from Atlantic Highlands, NJ circa 1996.   Lydia Yachts built the "FISHERMEN" in 1985 at Stuart, FL for Captains Ron Santee Sr. and Jr.   This is the fifth Santee family vessel to carry the "FISHERMEN" name and sail from Atlantic Highlands, NJ.   The "FISHERMEN" specializes in ¾-day fluke fishing during the summer months as well as evening trips for stripers, bluefish and weakfish.  JET, Brooklyn, NY – 1996  The "JET" fishing for flounder in Raritan Bay, NJ during the spring of 1996.   The "JET" was built in 1964 as Captain Ed Bunting's "SEA HORSE II" from Atlantic Highlands and later became Captain Wayne Westerlind’s "CAPT. WAYNE" from Captree, NY.   Today, the "JET" sails from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY and is operated by Captain Billie Doll.   Captain Billie is in his mid-seventies and is the oldest active skipper in the neighborhood.
