BROADWAY BASIN, Point Pleasant, NJ – 1958 Broadway Basin at Point Pleasant, NJ circa 1958. Seen in this color photo are the Captain Ed Sellinger's "REGNILLES" (his name spelled backwards), Captain Lou Nyhammer's "AMERICAN", Captain John Basnar's "ROMER II", Captain Jack Bogan's "SHAMROCK", and in the background Captain Harry Tonks' "YANK". Captain Sellinger was an expert welder and personally built the 45-foot steel hulled "REGNILLES" in 1951 at Newark, NJ. The 45-foot "AMERICAN" was built in 1945 by Johnson Brothers Boatworks at Bay Head, NJ and originally sailed as the Bogan Fishing Fleet's "PARAMOUNT V". The 45-foot "ROAMER II" was built in 1916 at New York, NY and originally sailed from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. The 65-foot "SHAMROCK" was built in 1953 by the Van Sant Boat Yard at Atlantic City, NJ and she was the first party boat ever built with a flush deck, that is, her cabins and heads were located on the main deck. In 1971, Captain Bogan sold the boat to his mate, Bob Pennington and she became his first "SEA DEVIL". The 110-foot black-hulled "YANK" was built in 1942 by Mantis Yacht Co. at Camden, NJ as the World War II U.S. Navy Sub Chaser "SC-635". It last sailed as the "BRONX QUEEN" and on December 20, 1989, she encountered rough seas while Whiting fishing near the entrance to Ambrose Channel. She lost a plank in her bow causing her to sink in less than twenty minutes.
