WHITBY III, Brooklyn – 1952
Captain 'Herbie' Hammer's "WHITBY III" from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn circa 1952. The Elco Boat Works, Bayonne, NJ built her in 1917 as the US Navy Subchaser "SC-101". She was sold as surplus after the end of World War I and converted to a party fishing boat. She first sailed as Captain Steve Wischerth's "FIDUS" from the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, NY and then as Captain Edward Baletti's "PALACE II" from Hoboken, NJ before becoming the "WHITBY III" in 1948. The "WHITBY III" was the last converted World War I Subchaser to sail from Sheepshead Bay.
