Hell Gate Light, Astoria, NY – 1912 This pyramidal wooden lighthouse was located at Astoria, NY at the entrance to hazardous Hell Gate Passage between New York City's East River and western Long Island Sound. Built in 1888, it replaced an iron skeleton type light built just four years earlier. In 1876, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used 50,000 pounds of explosives to blast dangerous rocks at Hell Gate, but it is still considered difficult to navigate due to strong tidal flows and heavy commercial vessel traffic.
