He was born and raised in Bridgewater Township, NJ and lived for many years in Point Pleasant, NJ before moving to Brick, NJ 46 years ago. He lived briefly in Smyrna, NC before returning to Brick in 2001. He was a veteran of the Naval Reserve and a licensed captain, employed most of his life by Bogan's Basin, operating fishing boats and more recently, river cruise boats. Over the many decades at Bogan's Basin in Brielle, NJ, Captain John operated an astonishing number of their boats including the "DIXIE", "COLUMBIA", "ESCORT", "FADA", "FRISCO", "PENSEY", "JERSEY", "REX", "ATLANTIS", "PARAMOUNT", "PARAMOUNT II", "JAMAICA", "JAMAICA II", "RIVER BELLE" and "RIVER QUEEN". Captain Dave Bogan Sr. recalled "John was like a family member... I can't imagine going to the Basin and not seeing "Longy" there! EVERYBODY loved him! The word NO was not in his vocabulary! John was devastated after his wife passed away, but he came back to the Basin and worked to the end." Captain John was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Lois (Metzler) Long in 1999. He is survived by his loving children, John and wife Dawn of Bellevue, NE, Tammy Adkisson and husband Dale of Toms River, NJ, and Kevin of Brick; sister-in-law Sheila (Metzler) Trafer and husband Gary of Point Pleasant; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Farewells were held on Tuesday April 19, 2011 at the Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, NJ followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Lakewood, NJ. Captain John is in our prayers and we wish his family and friends peace. Farewell Captain John. The Lord is my Pilot, I shall not drift. He guides me across the dark waters. He steers me in deep channels. He keeps my log. He pilots me by the star of holiness for His name's sake. Yea, though I sail 'mid the fenders and tempests of life, I shall dread no danger for He is near me. His love and care shelter me. He prepares a harbor before me in the homeland of eternity. He anoints the waves with oil, my ship rides calmly. Surely sunlight and starlight shall favor me on my voyages. And I will rest in the Port of our Lord forever.
